The outdoor weather sensor from LaskaKit combines precise temperature, humidity and pressure sensors – SHT40 and BMP280 with conformal coating from the factory and is therefore much more resistant to humid environments. It is ideal for outdoor weather measurement, weather stations or environmental monitoring. We designed this sensor because bme metal sensors do not measure humidity correctly after several months of operation outside.

Choosing a good, high-quality and affordable sensor for measuring temperature, humidity and pressure is not easy. It is with these requirements in mind that this module was created - a practical solution that combines high precision, ease of use and low power consumption.

The board features a modern SHT40 from the Swiss company Sensirion, enclosed in a compact DFN4housing. This sensor excels in temperature and relative humidity accuracy, low noise and reliability even in harsh environments. There is also a BMP280 - a proven Bosch sensor for accurate barometric pressure measurement and also additional temperature measurement. The module thus covers all basic meteorological variables.

The module also includes pull-up resistors for the I2C bus and a blocking capacitor to ensure a stable power supply. The unit is housed in a practical outdoor housing with filter, suitable for mounting in weather stations or other outdoor applications.

Thanks to a specially designed plate, the sensor part can be broken off and used for installation in the sensor housing or any other suitable housing. After breaking, there are no more pullup resistors on the ^I2Cboard and it is necessary that the device to which the sensor will be connected has them.

Refresh SHT4x sensors:

• We recommend that you refresh the sensor before the first start-up to remove any contamination and ensure that the sensor measures within the specified parameters. The refresh procedure consists of starting the internal heating of the sensor at a temperature of approximately 120°C for approximately 90 minutes until the measured humidity value drops to approximately 0–100 % RH. It is better to perform this procedure in a room with a humidity of about 50% RH and a temperature of about 23°C. Depending on the temperature and humidity in the room, the procedure time may vary. For this purpose, we have created a program for Arduino, where its basic properties are incorporated into the control of the internal heating and simultaneous measurement of the current humidity value. When the measured humidity drops to 5% RH, the cycle stops and switches to the standard measurement. The accurate values are then available after the sensor has cooled down to ambient temperature.
• This procedure can be used even if the sensor stops measuring the correct values over time.
