The capacitive soil moisture sensor addresses the biggest weakness of cheap resistive sensors – corrosion. Resistive sensors measure conductivity between two probes whose exposed metal gradually oxidises (even if gold-plated), causing resistance to increase and measurements to require constant recalibration. The capacitive principle uses a single surface without exposed metal, does not introduce direct current into the plants, and provides stable, long-term reliable measurements. Ideal for irrigation systems, smart pots, and plant monitoring.
